Crossover athlete Damon J. Smith is a former professional football player, track athlete and passionate competitive athlete. In 2005, after meeting a professional motocross racer, Brett Metcalfe, Damon was inspired to start racing motocross. He had just published his sports motivation book, Don't Stop the SwaggerTM, and his desire for an athletic challenge was strong. The thought of picking up a bike at 35 years old and competing against 12 year olds seemed laughable, but Damon was never one to shy from a challenge. He thought it would be the perfect way to test the concepts he wrote about in his book. In May of 2009, Damon earned his Pro AMA license and raced his first professional race that summer in Washougal, Washington on the premier AMA motocross circuit. He competed in select 2010 and 2011 West Coast 250 Lites Supercross events, and 2011 Arenacross races in Reno and Sacramento. Below are some of the highlights from his progression the pro ranks: Recent video is available, as well as archived video, from when Damon first started. In only 61 races, Damon amassed: By his second year of racing Damon advanced from to the competitive intermediate level, competing in the 2008 Lorretta Lynn's National Motocross Championships. The following year he competed in the World Amateur Arenacross Finals held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. By his third year, he decided to see if he could pass the rigorous qualification process required to advance to the pro level, competing against hundreds of other would-be pro racers for the 75 pro qualification points required to officially earn the "Pro" title. Over the course of three months he traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico; Salt Lake City, Utah; Reno, Nevada; Boise, Idaho and Spokane, Washington in an effort to earn his AMA points and Pro License. |
